GLOW

With a few study friends I visited GLOW. GLOW is Eindhoven’s public light festival where designers and artists, from all over the world, show there work. GLOW really shows what Eindhoven has to offer and I was really intrigued by it and it inspired me to do something with light. Here, to the right an aftermovie of GLOW to get the feeling what GLOW is all about.

Dutch Design Week

During the first RSDL-week I have visited the DDW. Due to sickness I didn’t get to see everything This disappointing because I heard good experiences on Sectie-C. Overal the DDW was inspiring. I especially liked the Graduation Show of the Design Academy. Although most of the designs were farfetched, I liked the way of presenting and some designs were close to Industrial Design. I found the Klokgebouw a disappointing, it was too crowded and not very innovative. I liked the exhibition of Morsestraat, where designs were placed in the windowsills, because it was in a public space.

During the Dutch Design Week I also did a day-long DIY Synthesizers workshop. This was a fun day of soldering, talking about designs and learning the basics of synthesizers.

I learned from the Design Week what kind of designs I like and dislike. I seek functionality and simplicity, things have got to be not to technical and not to ambiguous. Also, I got a boost of working with electronics, because of the synthesizer workshop.

Getikt @ DDW

Competencies: IT, T, DMM, IC, FS, DRP, SDCL

This semester I got the chance to work on a project for the DDW myself. Together with Lana, Tijmen and a group senior students, I was chosen to create a design that was able to create new interactions. We came up with a concept of a clock where the arms would disappear if you look at it too much.

I did learn a lot of thanks to this project. Working with senior years gave a real insight on how to brainstorm efficient. I also got the chance to work with new materials -like MDF, Perspex and spraypaint-, new ways of prototyping like lasercutting and sandblasting. I had a chance to get my first experience with electronics by thinking about the mechanics and watch with the coding. I was responsible for the looks of the clock and did a lot of research for this matter. The project also had a downside: we were with three of our normal project, which led to delays with that, but at the end we got way more back from it. It was an honor to be part of this group and project.

Logo Design & Clothing design INVICTI & Trigger

Competencies: FS, SDCL

For my own rowing team I designed a logo with illustrator. I did a lot of research on existing logos, what we wanted to stand for and thought of a name. From there I designed our logo. We also made a shield, caps and blazers with our logo and name on it. It was such a success that a rowing team from Njord at Leiden wanted me to design their logo and shield too.

Although this did cost me a lot of effort and time, I learned a lot about illustrator, logo designs, lasercutting, spray painting, and embroidering.

MATCIE @ Theta

Due to having a lot of work experience with boat repair, I was sort of forced to join the Equipment Committee at my rowing club. Due to lack of time I can't be present all the time, which is a shame. I like to work on repairing boats in order to be valuable for the club and like to share my knowledge on materials and techniques. It could be an advantage for my study too, because I will gain also a lot of knowledge.
