Milano Design Week

During the first SDL weeks I went on the firstyears Milano Studytrip, organized by Lucid. On this trip we visited several locations, events and expositions such as the Triennale Design Museum, Zona Tortona, Lambrate Ventura and the Salone del Mobile. The whole trip was really inspiring. Italian culture, fun and most of all contact with design.

Looking back, I can say that I found out that Italian design focusses a lot on aesthetics. On the Salone del Mobile I the focus laid almost entirely on interior design. I liked it, though I found out that I was missing ‘living’ and ‘smart’ designs.

Another element that developed my SCA at an abstract level was focussing on getting aware of new trends, such as the use of wood or co-creation. I got to see designs from all over the world, from traditional to ground-breaking, from Chinese to of course Dutch design.

The use of craftsman ship was also inspiring to me. Different textures and new ways of material use were finding my interests.

Altogether, I really enjoyed myself during this trip and got to know more first years students, which was also a goal for me this semester. I think I now know better what I like and moreover know what I dislike. This has brought me to a better view of what my identity is.

Workshop: Getting Things Done

SDCL

At the beginning of this semester I found my planning not so good since I was missing important things. This caused a lot of stress and I wanted to improve upon this. I attended the workshop in order to get to know the method 'Getting Things Done' of David Allen:

Don’t keep your tasks in your in-boxes until it becomes a huge pile of work, and inevitably making it impossible to oversee everything. Take care of it now! Allen’s theory is simple: your power to be productive is directly proportional to your ability to relax. Only when our minds are clear and our thoughts are organized we can achieve effective results and unleash our creative potential.

I learned a few simple tools to instantly simplify work and order. The main lesson is that I have to set up systems for myself in order to quickly go through things and get started with working instead of seeing the pile of work grow. I implemented a few minor things that worked for me and this summer I will reserve a couple of days, in order to set up the 'Big Bang'.

TU/ecomotive

Since I was invited to a meeting, at the beginning of this semester, I have been part of the early stage of Ecomotive. This is going to be a two year project of making a bio based, sustainble car.

The project is still at its begin but it is getting formed. The aim for the first year is to delegate the fulltime jobs to people and setting and gaining stucture in the concept development. I want to become a member of the designteam.

I hope to learn a lot concerning professionality, how to design shapes, sketching, CAD software and modelling software.

I am sure that working in a multi-disciplinary team like this (at least five different studies) I will get a whole different perspective on a design process.

I am aware that probably this project will cost more time than expected as it is allready hard to go to every meeting, though I know it will be good for my development as a designer.

As means of wanting to work with light and wanting to work with Arduino outside a project,  I intended to make an ambi-light behind my bed. This as being a nice side-project and learning experience.

Though I made it slightly different than expected. Due to a time stress at the ending of the regular project I didn't have enough time on focussing on making it a real ambient light as I envisioned with the ability to change the color. I made 7 blue uplighting tiles controlled by Arduino and printed interesting art -idea of storytelling tiles- This way I create a sort of moodboad and I want to be able to change it whenever I am done with the sight.

For next semester I want to do more of this DIY side-projects as I think it good to make things your own and I think it is a nice way of learning. It works motivating for me to see touchable progress.

Rowing & MatCie @ Theta

Next to the study I am also currently working on my passion for rowing. I had a great team which had 4 other ID students as members.

I also joined the Equipment Committee at Theta. I think this could also be of good value for the study, due to working with very expensive products and working as a craftsman.

The other added value of being at Theta is that you get in contact with other students from other faculties, what in my opinion is good to keep a broad knowledge.

In the future I might want to join a other committee at Theta that is also focussed on the study.

This video is by Naomi Kool  not by me, once again proof that I have to work on creating evidence and show it in a nice way.
